The Top 10 Lists

At the end of each month, Emil and Friends sit around the radio campfire and talk about western movies, the actors, the scripts, and, the musical scores. Emil is usually joined by Todd Roberts, Michael F. Blake, Robert Nott, John Komrada, Cotton Smith, and Johnny Boggs. Lively discusstions come up when the group tries to choose a "best of" or "Top 10" list of movies, movie scores, actors, directors, plots, or who was the best "bad guy."

EMIL'S NOTES: FORT TICONDEROGA?: MAN IN THE WILDERNESS( 1971); THE ALAMO (1960); DISTANT DRUMS (1951); DAVEY CROCKETT, KING OF THE WILD FRONTIER(1955); MAN FROM THE ALAMO(1953); THE FIGHTING KENTUCKIAN (1949); KIT CARSON (1940); THE LAST COMMAND(1955); RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE( 1976); THE KENTUCKIAN(1955); FAR HORIZONS(1955)

OK, so the west was once upstate New York and it really all began with James Fenimore Cooper. Note that these tend to cluster around some periods, like the French and Indian War, Texas and the Alamo, and the great mountain scenery of the Rockies after about 1820. There are whole places and periods left out in that westward movement and also note that a great percentage of ALL westerns cover the period 1865 to 1890 - a scant 25 years.
